Geo-targeting proxies let you select an IP by geographic location — country, state, city, ZIP, ASN, or coordinates. The short version: because prices, ads, search results, and stock are often served by region, residential proxies with real in-region IPs are the default, and the key is choosing a provider that offers the granularity your use case needs. The finer you need, the fewer providers offer it. This explainer is based on vendor documentation (July 2026, prices in USD).

Key takeaways

  • Geo-targeting selects an IP by location. You use it to capture region-served prices, ads, search, and stock accurately.
  • Residential is the default: real in-region IPs let you collect regional data with trust.
  • Choose granularity by use case: country to state to city to ZIP to ASN to coordinates. The finer you need, the fewer providers offer it.
  • Granularity guide: Oxylabs down to coordinates and ASN (finest), Bright Data and Decodo to ZIP and ASN, IPRoyal to country, state, and city (per each vendor's docs, July 2026).
  • This is a documented comparison; we have not independently benchmarked it. First test that a provider meets the granularity your use case needs, through its trial, refund window or smallest purchase.

What geo-targeting is (and why it matters)

Many sites change what they show based on where you access from. E-commerce prices and stock, ad placements, search results (SERPs), and product lineups differ by country, region, and sometimes city. So to capture how a region "actually looks," you need to access from an IP that genuinely lives there. Geo-targeting proxies let you specify which region's IP to use, which is essential for region-level price monitoring, ad verification, SEO SERP tracking, and market research. For the fundamentals, see what a residential proxy is.

Granularity, from country to coordinates

Geo-targeting granularity comes in levels, and the use case sets what you need.

  • Country: the most common. Enough for tracking country-level price or display differences.
  • State/region: for in-country differences, such as state-level campaigns.
  • City: to capture city-level prices, stock, and ads precisely.
  • ZIP: for local serving — region-limited stock or rates.
  • ASN: to target how things look through a specific ISP or network.
  • Coordinates (lat/long, radius): the finest geographic control, for precisely verifying location-based serving.

The finer the granularity you need, the fewer providers offer it. Datacenter can target by region too, but it carries less trust as a genuine local user (see residential vs datacenter proxies).

Provider geo granularity compared

The published geo-targeting granularity of the providers we track (per each vendor's docs, July 2026). Advertised pool sizes are ceilings, not guarantees: Proxyway's 2026 research puts the median advertised residential pool at 54M IPs.

Engineer's take (Hinata): Geo is not "more is always better" — it is "does it meet the granularity my use case needs." For country-level price comparison, country targeting is enough and Oxylabs' coordinate targeting is overkill. But to track region-limited coupons or city-level stock, you need ZIP or ASN, sometimes coordinates — and here IPRoyal's country/state/city ceiling falls short. I decide the granularity I need to verify serving at, then pick the minimal setup that meets it. That is how you avoid overpaying for precision.

Which type fits

For geo-targeting, residential is the default, because real in-region IPs capture how a region "actually looks" with trust. Datacenter can target by region but carries less trust as a genuine local user, making it worse for strictly capturing region-served differences. For a cross-provider comparison, see best residential proxies; for criteria, how to choose a proxy provider; for the deep dives, the Oxylabs review, Bright Data review, Decodo review, and IPRoyal review.

Choosing by use case

To track prices and stock that differ by country and region, you need residential IPs in the target market — country targeting for country-level, city or ZIP for city-level price differences. See proxies for price monitoring.

Compliance

For geo-targeting, the legitimate uses are public-data work — price monitoring, SEO, ad verification, market research. Not improperly bypassing geo-restricted content, mass-creating accounts, or collecting personal data. Our reasoning for choosing providers that can account for their IP origin is in ethical proxy sourcing. Verdict: choosing geo-targeting proxies

Bottom line

To accurately capture region-served prices, ads, search, and stock, residential proxies with real in-region IPs are the default. The key is whether a provider meets the granularity your use case needs: country targeting is enough for country-level, while city, ZIP, ASN, or coordinates narrow the field. Oxylabs is finest with coordinates and ASN, Bright Data and Decodo go to ZIP and ASN, and IPRoyal to country, state, and city (per each vendor's docs, July 2026). Configure the minimal granularity you need, and test capture accuracy in the target region with a trial, refund window or smallest purchase. We will update the numbers here once our own benchmarks are complete.

Proxies you can select by geographic location — country, state, city, ZIP, ASN, or coordinates. Because prices, ads, search results, and stock are often served by region, you use them to access from an IP in the target market and capture that region's data accurately.
